#7YearsWithGOT7 | 7 (or more) GOT7 B-Sides You Need To Listen To

It has been a very eventful period for the worldwide boy group GOT7 and their fans. It was just announced that none of the members will re-sign with their company, JYP Entertainment, and every member will pursue their individual endeavors from here on. The group just celebrated their seventh anniversary last January 16th and while we are all celebrating that the boys are finally free from the chains of JYP, we can’t help but feel sentimental and emotional.

Nevertheless, GOT7 is not just a boy group with challenging dance routines, good looks, and talented members; their title tracks may have not enticed you, but their b-sides proves that they have a solid discography as well. Here are seven b-sides from GOT7 you need to listen to! (Pre-release songs not included)

I Like You

2014 – Got It?

Let’s start this with what should have been GOT7’s debut song! Just kidding… or am I? Nevertheless, I Like You is the perfect song to capture what GOT7’s concept was when they debuted: playful and naughty influenced by hip-hop. This song is also one of the best GOT7 songs showcasing the rappers’ skills in rapping, which has been less utilized as their career went forward.

Like Oh

2014 – Got It?

Now this is what should have been GOT7’s debut song! No, really, Like Oh is THAT song. The song is pretty generic, but for a rookie boy group? It was pretty damn impressive! The song highlighted the vocals of the members more as there is little to no rap involved.

Turn Up The Music

2014 – Identify

Among all GOT7 albums, I think the most ignored was Identify, well I’m not gonna lie, it’s not as good as the other albums… thanks JYP! The song that stood out the most for me though was Turn Up The Music. Actually, I really enjoyed it a lot. It’s playful and is perfect for parties!

Tic Tic Tok

2015 – Mad

I remember the shivers I got when I heard the highlight medley of this album and the very last song to be teased was Tic Tic Tok. The four albums prior shown the members’ youthful sides but this album formally marked the start of their more mature image and style in music. Tic Tic Tok is an addictive song, and MarkSon’s rap? Perfection!

To. Star

2015 – Mad Winter Edition

The first time I listened to this song, I immediately thought of one thing. BEST GOT7 SONG SINCE DEBUT.  While that opinion may have changed or wavered, I’d still put To. Star or otherwise known as Farewell, as one of GOT7’s all time best songs. It showed GOT7’s more sentimental style with a ballad approach that proved the members’ beautiful voices and harmonies.

REWIND

2016 – Flight Log: Departure

I’ll be honest, GOT7’s music was pretty lackluster from debut to 2015. But thankfully in 2016, GOT7’s renaissance came through the Flight Log trilogy. This one in particular’s pretty special since one of my favorite members took part in its production. Rewind is just straight up sexy, alluring, and captivating.

Beggin’ on my Knees

2016 – Flight Log: Departure

Did you know that this song is written by DAY6 member, Young.K?

I often see fans regarding Beggin on my Knees as the Flight Log trilogy’s best song and I wouldn’t blame them at all. The song is probably one of their strongest ever and while Fly is great, Beggin on my Knees is epic.

Boom x3

2016 – Flight Log: Turbulence

If you see a GOT7 fan wearing AirPods suddenly body-rolling, it’s most likely that they’re listening to Boom x3. You also may have not noticed but we’re already at the eighth song but who cares, GOT7’s music is that good.

Sign

2016 – Flight Log: Arrival

If you’re into sexy music and crazy vocals, then Sign is for you. The highlight of the song is probably the bridge where the group’s main vocal, Youngjae, explodes with his powerful vocals.

Q

2016 – Flight Log: Arrival

I always had a very soft spot for Q inside my heart. The Flight Log series was pretty much leaning on the edgy and dark concept’s side and while there are some exceptions along the way (Let Me for example), none of them left me in awe as much as Q. Listening to Q is like listening to heart-fluttering cotton candy. I know music can’t have color but this one’s definitely pastel.

Face

2017 – 7 for 7

Out of all GOT7 albums and title tracks, 7 for 7 and For You are among the top two. However, if I’m to choose a song to replace For You, it’s Face, no doubt. As I mentioned in my previous review of the song here at OHPress, everything about this song just falls perfectly into place.

Thank You

2017 – Eyes on You

Last January 16, to celebrate GOT7’s debut anniversary, fans streamed this song ’til it eventually reached the #1 spot in Genie chart. As an Ahgase, this song holds a very special place in my heart. Thank You is one of their most emotional songs and is guaranteed to make you feel emo if you listen while reading the lyrics at the same time.

The time this was released, the lyrics can be interpreted as a song to a lover or to their parents/family. Listening to this song now hits very differently.

Enough

2018 – Present: You

Enough starts as a very low key song but as the song progressed, it turned into a really fun and energetic song. This song is a reminder that GOT7 started as a hiphop boy group as evidenced by the rap verses.

No One Else

2018 – Present: You

It’s crazy how I almost left out this song in this list. Sorry, GOT7! Nevertheless, this song is impressively dynamic. Listening to the verses makes you think that the build-up is for a highly energetic chorus but they went with an anti-climatic spoken rap-like hook.

1°

2019 – Spinning Top: Between Security & Insecurity

1° started this album very strongly. By now, you may have already captured my taste in GOT7’s music. If you’re a fan of R&B music, this song is surely for you. That chorus is nothing short of crazy and absolute madness.

Page

2019 – Spinning Top: Between Security & Insecurity

Page is not just a fan favorite, but is also the members’. Apparently, the boys wanted to make this a title track but because of a devilish primate intervention, they weren’t able to. GOT7’s leader JB (now going by JAY B) produced this masterpiece. With its catchy chorus, upbeat tone, and just being a great song in general, it’s no question how they wanted to fully promote this song.

Crash & Burn

2019 – Call My Name

Crash & Burn will always be a wasted GOT7 opportunity for me. This had every chance to be a very strong title track but You Calling My Name is crazy good too so I wish they have saved it for another comeback. By the time this was released, GOT7 was already in their 5th year but it’s their first time performing a song like this. It’s sensual and powerful at the same time which is probably why I love this song so much.

We Are Young

2020 – Breath of Love: Last Piece

Out of all GOT7 albums, the most mature sounding is definitely Breath of Love: Last Piece and I don’t mean that because it’s particularly sexual or edgy; it’s because it’s an album that showed how they grew throughout the seven years of their career as GOT7. Most songs are lowkey and barely upbeat like We Are You whose primary focus is the singing skills of the members. The song brings forth an oxymoronic message on how seven year idols soon going their individual ways are still experiencing their youth.

Thank You, Sorry

2020 – Breath of Love: Last Piece

Don’t worry, this is the last one.

Thank You, Sorry is like a direct response to the earlier song Thank You; and as it may sound, it’s definitely a song that can be interpreted as a song for their supporters that gave them strength through the seven years. In some way, it’s a song that doesn’t just give thanks (to the fans) and apologize (as they’re leaving), it’s also a momentary goodbye (to everyone, as they’re going their separate ways).

While GOT7 assures fans they aren’t disbanding and will release music together as a group in the future, with their contract expiration and joining to different agencies, it will be very difficult at the moment. Not gonna lie, this list was really supposed to be just seven but I’d betray my IGOT7 heritage if I dare not mention their other gems.

Writing this article made me go back to their music which I listened to since their debut and now that it may come to an end makes me feel emotional. GOT7 brought us sad & sentimental, and joyous & fun times with their music and content in general. We hope every one of the seven the best in their individual paths without forgetting that they are members of a group that dominated the world- GOT7.
