A-mei or A-Mei (Chinese: 阿妹, pinyin: Āmèi), stylized as a MEI since 2014, is the stage name of the aboriginal Taiwanese pop singer and songwriter Chang Hui-mei (張惠妹). She made her debut in the world of music in 1996, achieving rapid commercial success. She has been called a diva of the Mandarin pop music scene and the “Pride of Taiwan”. She has won numerous music awards and is popular within Mandarin-speaking world.

Wrapup

The Golden Melody Awards have come and gone. Soon the AOTW threads will go back to normal instead of focusing on the nominees. I’m going to finish off this series by featuring the winner of the Best Mandarin Female Singer. The winner of the Best Mandarin Male Singer award, Eason Chan, will be featured at a later time.

A-Mei is one of the biggest names in Cpop having been in the industry for 18 years and releasing 18 albums. People usually name Jolin Tsai and Elva Hsiao as the “divas” of Cpop, but A-Mei is right up there with them. Not only is she a talented singer, but she is very versatile. Her last few albums have shown a level experimentation that has has paid off and pushed herself forward. Admittedly, I have only listened to the albums from Star onward and I can only assume what her music was like before then, but I think she has opened herself up to a new audience now. It feels like she has captured the attention of people who would not normally be fans of her previously.

Not only has she just won Best Mandarin Female Singer with the release of “Faces of Paranoia (Only the Paranoid Survive)”, but she has a very real chance of repeating next year with “AMIT2”. I was waiting for a second album from her Amit persona for years. After postponements and a release of an A-Mei album, it finally came out and I was not disappointed. It is one of the best Cpop albums to come out this year, if not the best.
