While there is an almost consensus in the K-Pop world on who are the male concept idols, which is VIXX, there had been limited talks about who is deserving of the title for female groups. Of course there are lots of concepts that girl groups have tried already, but to be known as the female concept idols, like VIXX, they need to have concepts that are unique, new, and has impact. For this topic, the apple of my eye is recently Gugudan, and their varying number of interesting concepts.
Actually, Gugudan’s main concept in general is “theater girls”. Their releases are branded by different “act”s as if in every release, the theater girls are trying on a different play. Their concepts may be based on already popular movies, stories, or legends which creates a wider range of possibilities without limiting them to the usual over-used themes in K-Pop.
Gugudan as mermaids
While the majority was quite unimpressed with their debut track, they tend to forget that the concept for Gugudan’s debut, “Wonderland”, was pretty unique. In their first act, “Act 1: The Little Mermaid”, they portrayed mermaids living in an underwater house. To create more emphasis on the concept, the stage outfits are mermaid-inspired and in their music video, they also danced above water.
The lyrics of the title track “Wonderland” was a refreshing break from all the lovey-dovey songs. Instead, it tackled about them reaching their dreams and doing their best, just like how the little mermaid dreamed to become human.
Gugudan as narcissists
Creating a huge difference of feedback with “Wonderland”, their first comeback track gained little to no negative reception. Their concept this time around is based on Greek mythology, specifically the story of Narcissus. In a nutshell, Narcissus fell in love with his own reflection in the waters and ceased to stop until he died (yeah that is where the word “narcissist” came from).
The song reflected the concept by having lyrics of over-confidence. The music video also had comical elements of narcissism like: Soyee, a flower, dipping her feet in water to hydrate herself. Mimi literally photocopying her own face. And Hana living inside a room full of mirrors to reflect her own radiating beauty.
Gugudan as Oompa Loompas
Probably their most unique and funniest comeback yet, Gugudan became factory workers in “Chococo”. The concept is based on the popular novel and movie “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” where they put a Gugudan twist and titled their first single album “Act 3: Chococo Factory”. It featured a very addicting and fun sound that is very catchy. It also had a very comic music video with unexpected hilarious scenes such as Sejeong channeling her inner San Goku, the creepy doll, Mimi and her chocolate volcano, and many more.
Gugudan as sexy cats
Just a week ago, Gugudan made their much awaited comeback with “The Boots”. Their concept this time is based on the mythical character named “Cait Sith” thus, naming their 2nd single album “Act 4: Cait Sith”. The concept is similar to the Pixar film “Puss In Boots” where the girls became cat transforming gorgeous ladies in the music video. The sound of “The Boots” is a new sound for Gugudan while, of course, retaining the showcase of their vocal prowess.
Gugudan’s concepts are indeed very interesting, right? I hope they do more refreshing concepts in the future! Which among Gugudan’s concepts is your favorite? Which other girl groups do you think is as distinct as Gugudan when it comes to concepts? Drop them at the comments box below!
