After about nine months, the princesses of Jellyfish Entertainment are back! Though things may have been rocky for the group, Gugudan still managed to deliver their usual dose of quality and beauty. Earlier this month, youngest member, Hyeyeon, announced her departure from the group to focus on her studies and health. And just today, Gugudan dropped their much-awaited comeback music video, “Not That Type“, along with their third mini album, “Act.5 New Action“.
As expected, Gugudan did nothing but amaze everyone in every aspect available. The top-notch vocals of Haebin, Sejeong, and Nayoung are ever pleasing to the ears. The choreography is also probably their most captivating and most challenging routine by far. The music video isn’t their best but that is just a personal opinion and yet it remains aesthetically beautiful. Lastly, of course, the song is a pure dance bop that has a very catchy hook. Together with Gugudan’s extraordinary charms, this comeback proves to be one of their bests.
However, aside from everything mentioned above, what stood out for me the most is ironically the aspect Jellyfish Entertainment forgot. Soyee, who is one of the group’s main/lead vocalists, only got a couple of words which is actually a cheap excuse for having “lines” in the song. She is also always out of frame in their dance formations, making it hard for her to even have a spotlight on her own. Disappointed, but not surprised. Jellyfish has always been this hostile to Soyee and even to the main vocalist, Haebin.
Nevertheless, Gugudan once again amazed me with their music. Hopefully, this will be the era that will make their charms known not only inside the fandom, but to the general public.
