Korean Artist Of The Week (July 8 – July 14) – Hong Dae Kwang

Hong Dae Kwang rose to fame as a contestant on Superstar K4 in 2012, where he came in fourth place. However, he was no stranger to performing before his time on the popular television show. Dae Kwang was known for showcasing his songs on the streets, busking. After Superstar K4, he signed with CJ E&M Music and he eventually debuted in 2013 with 멀어진다 (Far Away) and is active today, over two years later, with 너랑 (With You). His musical style is that of a singer/songwriter with plenty of pop ballads, and he packs a punch with his strong vocals. At the age of 28, he’s newer to the music scene, but his musical style thoughtful lyrics are captivating and have caught South Korea’s attention. We’ll be seeing a lot more of him in the future, for sure!

Thoughts

I’ve been a fan of artists like Roy Kim for a long time, so I was actually shocked when I hadn’t caught onto Hong Dae Kwang at debut. I don’t have interest in competition shows, so that might be the biggest reason that he hadn’t shown up on my radar. He was introduced to me by a friend and he moved up my soloist list almost immediately. Dae Kwang’s music is very soothing and easy to listen to, ranging from acoustics to pop ballads. His music might be best suited for the colder months of the year, but you should be able to enjoy him while relaxing. I’m also going to go out on a limb here and comment that he has a very cute face for a thirty-year-old (Korean age).
