MV REVIEW | EXO Is Grooving To The Beat At Their Own “Tempo”

It’s been almost a week since the drought ended for many EXO-Ls. Last November 2, the universe finally blessed the K-pop scene with the return of EXO and their fifth full-length album, Don’t Mess Up My Tempo. The album carries new head-bopping tunes with the track “Tempo” as the lead single. Without a doubt, EXO has released another solid album and shows no signs of their stars dwindling.

If you’re interested in reading the track-by-track analysis, you can check out the album review here. For now, the spotlight will shift its direction to the long-awaited music video. After refreshing everyone with vibrant hues of summer and quirky galactic superhero theme last year, EXO makes a different turn and takes the road this time in roaring motorcycle bikes. Let’s dive in!

Release Date: November 2, 2018

Total Runtime: 00:04:01

Recommended for: People who are currently jamming to every track of Don’t Mess Up My Tempo.

NOT Recommended for: Those who have crazy god-like standards for a music video.

MV REVIEW

The video strongly begins with Chen anchored by his soaring vocals, and then swiftly moves to the groovy beat of “Tempo” partnered with a striking choreography right off the bat. It’s reminiscent of their past releases which stand in the middle ground of dusk and gleam. The lighting of “Tempo” gives a dark vibe in scintillating flashes of lights and vivid colors. Its color motif of red and black serve as beautiful accent colors that nicely compliments with other hues as well.

Despite being a box-themed video, the props used in each set are well-selected and brought balance to the overall atmosphere. The smooth transition between scenes also allows you to enjoy watching the members and the group dancing in sync while following where the storyline is heading. The brief flashes of the members across the halfway mark gives an extra flair of angst and intensity to the whole production.

Cinematography wise, there aren’t too many wild shots, but it’s varied. You see numerous captivating angles of EXO members individually that are screenshot-worthy. The style direction of the music video of EXO is also commendable — it showcases their handsome looks in a mix of streetwear, casual and grunge outfits which perfectly suits the concept. Known as one of the most sought-after groups to grace magazine covers, EXO effortlessly killed the fashion game this comeback.

As you reach the end of the song, a mysterious figure holding a glistening cube appears which seems to be a cliffhanger that concludes the video, leaving a door open for a sequel to the repackage album. Overall, the music video is clean, alluring, and polished. Its magnetizing appeal will leave you wanting for more while the song stays inside your head. The new era of EXO’s comeback has just begun, and one thing is for sure — everyone is in for a thrilling and unforgettable ride.
