MV REVIEW | Jeon Soyeon’s BEAM BEAM Makes an Awkward Splash as It Dives Into the Swimming Pool

That’s what happens when you leave out most of the distinct flavour out of the title track like you leave out the veggies out of the burger.

Food groups aside, the music video actually shines with Soyeon’s colours, just like her previous two music videos, JELLY, and IDLE SONG. The glaring beam beam in the music video is sharp on the eyes and mimics the glare of the sun on a hot summer day perfectly. The music is upbeat and definitely has summer vibes written all over it. It can easily be something that you play on the speakers as you’re diving into the swimming pool.

But those are about the only redeeming qualities the song has. If you’re looking for more meaning in the song, you’ll be left disappointed.

The music video is supposed to be fun and cheery, but the shenanigans of Windy—the persona that Soyeon adapts for this track—just makes her look like a jerk. There’s nothing cheerful about her picking (ridiculous) fights and throwing things and food around. Even if they do end in (cringe-worthy) dance-offs.

The attitude driven Windy is most likely meant as an homage to her own appearance as a contestant on Unpretty Rapstar, but the “scary unnie” just seems out of place in the bright and colourful music video.

The lyrics are just okay, and just feel awkward in some parts of the song altogether. The words feel like something that might have been written in a few hours. It’s certainly not one of her masterpieces. The electric guitars added to the beat driven song to make it a bit edgier are a nice touch, but it doesn’t save the song in terms of overall quality.

If you’re looking for a fun, no worries, care-free attitude, summer anthem, then this is the song for you. It’s catchy, upbeat, and something you can blast loud as you’re slurping on your slushie in the heat.

If you’re looking for one of Soyeon’s masterpieces that you know her to be capable of, you won’t find it here. It’s meant to just be silly fun. This song’s not for you.

Take the Summer Song for what it is: 8/10
As a Masterpiece potential: 2/10
The Overall Quality to add to your collection: 5/10

Happy Summer, and enjoy the whole ice cream cone!
