For the first time since OH! Chart’s return, an entry maintains its position for two months in a row. Red Velvet’s Psycho tops charts everywhere and achieves something that none was able to. To make their success even sweeter, part of their numbers in January came from a category that has not been all too idol-friendly as of late. They’ve done what seemed to be impossible for idols to achieve. Read on to find out how they pulled it off.
OH! Chart Top 15: January 2020 / MONTH 05
Result
Digital Chart
In an impressive showing, idols managed to overcome to idol curse and ranked within the top 3. Red Velvet‘s Psycho scored 155,924,111 on Gaon Digital Chart, placing third below Changmo (188,312,055) and Zico (180,132,836), the latter of whom is technically an idol, even if he’s not necessarily the cookie-cutter type.
Physical Chart
Shockingly, idols dominate physical sales once again, this time with male idols vastly outselling female competition. In fact, Taeyeon (44,437) is the only female artist to rank in the top 5, below ATEEZ (128,273), Kim Jaejoong (107,437) and Super Junior (107,234). Perhaps the next month will be kinder to women in this regard.
Votes
This category is most definitely where January’s #1 rose above the competition, securing 17 votes in total, way more than SF9 (9 votes), Mamamoo or Taeyeon (5 votes apiece). Considering how close Taeyeon is with Red Velvet, especially Yeri, it’s practically a double win for them. It most definitely is a big win for SM Entertainment at least.
Final Ranking
Red Velvet‘s combination of stellar digital sales, as recorded on Gaon, and overwhelming support from our readers earn them a score of 14.68. These figures catapulted them ahead of other digital frontrunners Changmo and Zico who earn 8.51 and 8.17, respectively. Unfortunately, those ranking at the top in terms of physical sales couldn’t break into the top 3 since none vastly outperformed anyone.
And that, my friends, is how Red Velvet‘s ‘Psycho’ managed to secure its spot at the top for the second consecutive months.
What is OH! Chart Again?
OH! Chart is a monthly music charting system that is unique to the OneHallyu community and OH! Press readers. It tracks top 10 songs on Gaon Monthly Digital Chart and the top five best-selling albums on Gaon Monthly Album Chart. Thus, only data from exceptional performers will be collected for both categories. We will then aggregate the data and rank the songs based on three voting categories: Streaming and Downloads (55% of votes), Physical Sales (20%) and OH! Press Reader Votes (25%). After each full month, OH! Chart will be updated to reflect the best-selling and most-loved songs.
How the Results are Calculated
The top 10 songs from Gaon Monthly Digital Chart and title songs of the top five albums from Gaon Monthly Album Chart are selected. Only data for exceptional performers from these two charts will be counted towards their scores. Those who perform exceptionally across the board will have the advantage of scoring in all of them. For the final scores, each song’s individual data for one category is divided by the sum of that category, then multiplied by our chosen percentage (i.e. 0.20 for physical sales). The grand totals from all three categories are added together and multiplied by 100, forming the final score.
OH! Chart #1: Red Velvet’s Psycho
There is rarely any correlation between quality of music and commercial success, but in this case, Red Velvet‘s ‘Psycho‘ deserves every bit of shine it gets. With such incredible replayability, the song simply does not get old. It’s going to be a real challenge for them to top something as flawless as this comeback, but I would like to see it.
