Following T.O.P, G-DRAGON, Taeyang, and Daesung’s enlistment (and soon Seungri’s), BIGBANG have released Flower Road. This heartfelt single is a bit of a throwback to their old sound, yet updated stylistically to create a pleasantly refreshing parting song.
While quite melancholic, the lyrics to Flower Road radiates a reassuring and comfortable feeling. The way BIGBANG communicates with their fans through this song digs deep into the strong connection they have with those who support them. I can especially see this in the lyrics to T.O.P’s rap verse around the 1:52 mark.
“One year, 365 days, you’re my one and only in this world
My savior who gave me motive for my music
I leaned on your big flower garden and came up with lyrics
I still remember so clearly, padam padam
Your flower that is in full bloom has 100,000 colors
An infinite and great ring, like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons
You’re still a picture that I can’t even place in my heart
I’m doubting my eyes, you are my magical queen”
The acoustic guitar prevalent on Flower Road brings me back to BIGBANG’s earlier releases. But in place of the usual piano melody commonly used in BIGBANG’s older discography, we have repetitive beating synths which transform the song into something more suitable for the newer era.
T.O.P’s deep voice contrasting with G-DRAGON’s more nasally tone in their rap verses works well together to bring an interesting dynamic to the song. The vocal line’s parts littered throughout are able to easily keep up the spirit of the track without sacrificing the sentimental emotions present in the lyrics.
I’ve always thought that each BIGBANG member’s unique vocal inflections paired together with the rest of the group was one of their strongest points. While each member has their own distinctive sound, they can still effortlessly blend well collectively. However, I definitely wish we could’ve heard more from Seungri and Daesung on this track as I feel their parts are a bit overshadowed.
The hook to Flower Road is gentle and easygoing, yet the lyrical content makes it all the more impactful. Surrounded by G-DRAGON and T.O.P’s rapping as well as Taeyang, Seungri, and Daesung’s vocals, it makes for an all around, well-rounded track, and it just keeps getting better with every repeat!
To close off this review, I’ll leave you with my favourite lyric from Flower Road. I cannot wait until BIGBANG can reunite once again on the stage to show us what else they have to offer.
“This isn’t the last time for us
Please, let’s meet again when the flowers bloom”
………, I definitely wish we could’ve heard more from Seungri and Daesung ………i was waiting all the time to just hear few s of daesung !!
Happy ! Finally someone talked about the distribution line ! it seems like it”s all the time YB/GD/TOP feet daesung & seungri ! taeyang seems like dying while reaching the high note but gd as always feeding his BF by giving him 30% of the song !
lol i agree completely. In Flower Road to be honest I didn’t like Taeyang’s voice. It was very squicky like a bird. SEungri and Dae would have done a better job if they were given Taeyang’s part. I think GD wants his besfrient Tae to shine all the time.
Oh my god! and specially when he did that ouuhhh adlib ! i was saying here we go some more sec wasted ! which could be added to the others but no he need to go all the way ouuhhhh ….like man …seriously ..! thats why i escape all his part ! daesung with all his throat problems can give the feels that he sang effortlessly! and seungris voice was great too!
I will not question GD about the line distribution of song because he knows the best after all he is the creator but I always on every BB song , I wished he would have given more line to Seungri and Daesung… they have amazing vocal but always taeyang gets all the lines… my major disappointment over line distribution was “Let’s not fall in Love” where Daesung and Seungri got only few seconds to sing… this is the only disappointment Bigbang ever given to me..
because Taeyang is his long time best friend. I also wanted to hear more Seungri and Dae. I am tired of Taeyang voice. Especially in this song FLower Road Taeyang voice sounded very squicky.
GD is not a GOD! Gd is just a humain like every one else! so automatically his songs get influenced by his own feeling ! or maybe YG decision too !
Most of the time I hate the lines distribution… Riri and Dae have amazing voices
I hated the line distribution. Taeyang voice was not made for this song. That is why i want Seungri to release his solo album and go on a world tour so that VIPs can enjoy his music. He better not enlist right after releasing his solo. I will be so mad. Panda deserve a WORLD TOUR just like his hyungs
I was definitely overtaken by Seungri’s voice in this song.
Dae is my one and only love, however in this song I wished Taeyang would have less parts and Seungri more ???
me too seungri’s voice was very good and like always daesung is a victime either by the timing of his part or when getting only the boring part ! l
Except Let’s not fall in love (don’t like that one) I don’t have problems with Dae’s lines. His voice is too strong/emotional/perfect so it must be hard for GD to find a good spot for him, that’s why I am happy that Dae always has a good spot ???
